Description
This is a composite image consisting of a 10 minute foreground exposure
followed by hundreds of 30 second exposures for the sky blended in
photoshop to reveal the movement of the stars over the course of 3
hours. When facing south, such as in this shot, all stars travel in a
circle around a central point (in the Southern Hemisphere this is within
the Southern Cross constellation). This kind of star trail is called a
circumpolar star trail. Raetahinga Point is on the cliff tops above
O’Neils beach and is part of the Hillary Trail. From this point you can
look out over O’Neils beach and Bethels beach beyond it, as in this
photo, and on the other side you get a view out toward Muriwai Beach.
The three hour in-the-dark hike was worth this result.
